Judges for Lloyd's List Global Awards 2010 Selected AWT as a Finalist for Environmental Protection Award

AWT's Routing Technology Helps Maritime Shipping Industry to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Related C02 Emissions, While Enhancing Safety

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 3, 2010 – Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT), today announced that the judges for the Lloyd's List Global Awards 2010 have selected AWT as a finalist in the Environmental Protection Award category. AWT's award entry describes how its ship routing technology, used on more than 35,000 vessel-voyages per year, is making a difference in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the shipping industry by helping Captains to identify the safest, most fuel-efficient routes.

AWT estimates its routing services and BonVoyage (BVS) marine voyage optimization software save the shipping industry approximately 350,000 metric tons (MT) of fuel annually. This translates to potential cost savings of more than $166 million USD per year and reduction of 1,114,000 MT in CO2 emissions, the equivalent of removing 247,000 cars from the road.

AWT's weather routing experts analyze key variables including wind conditions and ocean currents as well as vessel type, age, stability, cargo and speed, to recommend optimal routes. They use short- and long-range forecasts, historical climate data and proprietary climatological ship resistance models to help Captains identify optimal routes and avoid adverse weather and sea conditions that could endanger crew and cargo, and cause delays leading to excessive fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

"We are honored to be among the organizations that are finalists for the Lloyd's List Environmental Protection Award," said Skip Vaccarello, president and CEO for AWT. "Adopting weather routing technology is one of the most effective steps the shipping industry can take today to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing safety, saving fuel and money. It makes sense on many levels, for many entities – Captains and crew, shipping companies, their customers and the environment."

Lloyd's List is the leading global daily newspaper for the maritime industry, and its awards provide a benchmark of excellence in the major disciplines of shipping. The Environmental Protection Award "honours the institution, company or individual that has done the most to fight towards reducing the pollution of our oceans from maritime sources."

Award winners will be announced on September 29 at the Lloyd's List Global Awards dinner and presentation at London's Dorchester Hotel.
